Digital Dollar, FedNow, CBDC, the central banks spending and global push for more control through digital currency.

At the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak a few interesting things happened. China introduced the "Digital Yuan / RMB" And in April the "Digital dollar" was proposed in the first stimulus bill here in the USA. And they haven't stopped talking about it since. High tables from the White house Financial committee, Federal Reserve, US congress. Aiming to have a digital currency working as early as 2021 to provide UBI / Universal basic income to the masses, all while being able to track, freeze, limit, manipulate spending throughout the economy. Starting to sound rather like a "Black mirror film" isn't it? Well...China has taken it a step farther with their "Social Credit system" watching and controlling nearly every aspect of life. . . but we're here to talk about currency. How could this even happen in America? Well, to start
All of the above is a partial list of factors devaluing the Dollar and trust in it from several ways and views. At the end of the day it has a huge amount of enemies, that are all looking for ways to get out of it.
Some of what I'm seeing personally.
It is a death spiral for the working person, where it used to be "No more than 30% of your wage going to housing" It is now well over 50%....Just look at this recent post in Frugal https://www.reddit.com/Frugal/comments/ifqah1/is_it_normal_for_a_third_to_a_half_of_you?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
This death spiral I foresee getting worse. And historically any "tax" / regulation cost will just be passed down to the consumer in form of increased prices until people / businesses move elsewhere as we've seen in several cities around the US.

So what can we do? Buy Gold! Silver! Bitcoin! Stocks! I hear people roar, They aren't exactly wrong as history shows... but have you considered the 30-40% tax on the "gain"? Even when that asset buys the same value before tax? What if the government makes it illegal like the 1933 order: 6102 Where you couldn't own gold for nearly 50 years? You're frozen out, or even out on taxes (which will likely be more strict and controlled later in time).
I'd say Invest in things that will
Metals are the next step when a person has plenty of the above. You get to a point where you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions that you need to condense into something real.
It is all about the savings or productivity gain of the investment. For instance I would wager that many preppers have gotten more use / value out of a $800 clothes washer than a $800 rifle. (have you ever had to do manual laundry???) Sure the rifle will hold value...but it often doesn't pay you back with time / what it saved and / or what it has produced during its life unless you are using it. Same can be said of security cameras, a generator, a tractor, trailer, garden, tools, ect.
Look at history even, in countries that have experienced hyperinflation people that already had tangibles they regularly use were way ahead. It could even be honey, a tool, extra maintenance parts, can of food, that bottle of medicine, a computer to keep your intel on point, (cough # PrepperIntel plug) use of your equipment to do or make something for someone. Real Estate is good too, it rides inflation well and has many ways of being productive.
Your metals could be sitting there like the rifle, and could be subject to hot debate and laws. Meanwhile that garden is paying back, chainsaw is helping saw up wood, or your tractor is helping a job, your tools just helped you fix something / saved you much loss, Your security stopped a loss not by a person, but an random animal stealing things. Or that $25,000 solar array is paying you back by the day in spades...while making you independent...running all your tools you're using to make things to sell, and even heating / cooling some of the house with the extra juice while places around you experience rolling blackouts. You were even smart and took the current 24% tax benefit the government has saving you $5000 on it for batteries. Don't get me started if you have an electric vehicle with solar... I'm rambling at this point...and all those stealthy / direct and passive background savings...even if the crap doesn't hit the fan.
So anyways, With out of control central banks and big governments, digital currencies, How do you think it will play out? Are we heading to dystopia?

A brief history of the 2013 market peak; why some alts really do die; and what would've happened if you'd given in to FOMO

This piece is a follow-up to my earlier piece, which looked at what would’ve happened if you’d purchased alt-coins shortly after the bottom of the 2013-2015 bear market. A lot of the constructive criticism that I received was that I was too bullish on alt-coins, and that the timing was too convenient. Although it’s fair to say that I am bullish on crypto in general and alt-coins in particular (with several major caveats for both), I agree that it’s important to not just focus on historical analyses where it’s fairly clear that you could have earned money. So, today’s research question is whether you’d still be underwater if you’d bought in to the market at or near the 2013 all-time high. All information cited herein comes from the historical charts available at CoinMarketCap.
TL;DR: This worst-case scenario analysis shows that $300 invested equally across 15 of the 40 coins in existence near the market’s peak in 2013 would be worth only $429.95 today—gains which are entirely attributable to Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ripple. This is basic, but it can be dangerous to buy high. This is especially true of alt-coins, but even the top three coins in our sample saw fairly lackluster results when bought at the top of the market. Finally, nothing in this post should be taken as investment advice. This is only intended as historical analysis. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.
A Brief History of the 2013 Market Peak
According to CoinMarketCap, the 2013 bull market peaked on December 4, 2013, at ~$15.87 billion in market capitalization.* Thereafter, the market crashed dramatically not once, but twice. In the first crash, which occurred between December 5-8, 2013, overall market cap fell by ~39% to ~$9.66 billion. Then, after a brief recovery to ~$13.57 billion on December 10th, the market fell precipitously, to ~$5.7 billion on December 18, 2013. Thus, over the course of only two weeks, from December 4-18, 2013, the market lost ~64% of its value. Although this was by no means the end of the 2013-2015 bear market--which lasted for approximately 17 months and saw an additional decline of ~45% from the December 18, 2013 low--this was the end of the beginning.
What If I Bought Crypto Right as the 2013 Market Peaked?
Generally, the first rule of trading is** that you want to buy low and sell high. As a result of their fear of missing out (“FOMO”), however, many people find themselves accidentally buying high. Today, I’m going to look at what would have happened to someone who bought their crypto right as the market was peaking. Ideally, I would run this experiment from December 4, 2013, but due to the limited data available from CoinMarketCap, I’m forced to choose between November 24th, December 1st, December 8th, and December 15th. Of those dates, I have selected December 1, 2013, because it represents the worst possible scenario for which I have data. On that date, total crypto market cap, which had hit a new high of ~$15.4 billion the day before, swung wildly between a high of ~$14.83 billion and a low of ~$12.18 billion. Unfortunately, it’s unclear exactly when CoinMarketCap’s snapshot was taken. That said, it’s clear that our hypothetical FOMO trader is about to lose his shirt over the next few weeks, so let’s dive into the specifics.
On December 1, 2013, there were 40 coins listed on CoinMarketCap. I won’t list them all here, but of those 40, all but 11 are still listed as active on CoinMarketCap. The truly dead (or “inactive”) coins are BBQCoin (BQC; rank 16), Devcoin (DVC; rank 19), Tickets (TIX; rank 22), Copperlark (CLR; rank 24), StableCoin (SBC; rank 25), Luckycoin (LKY—ironic, I realize; rank 31), Franko (FRK; rank 34), Bytecoin (BTE; rank 35), Junkcoin (JKE—how apt; rank 36), CraftCoin (CRC; rank 39), and Colossuscoin (COL; rank 40).***
Now, since this post is already incredibly long, instead of testing all 40 coins, let’s take a decently-sized sample of five coins each from the top, middle, and bottom of the stack, and look at what happens. For the middle, although the temptation is to take decent alts, let’s fight that and take the group with the highest failure rate: ranks 21-25. So, here’s out pool:
Now, here are how our sample of coins has performed as of when I write this:****
So, if our hypothetical FOMO trader had invested $100 in our top-five sample near the 2013 peak, it would currently be worth $411.80 (the profitable coins) + $3.06 (PPC) + $4.27 (NMC) = $419.13—a 4.19x increase.
Now for the two coins in the middle five that didn’t completely die:
So, if our hypothetical FOMO trader had invested $100 in our middle-five sample near the 2013 peak, it would currently be worth ~$15.19—an ~84.8% loss.
Finally, here are the two coins from the bottom five that didn’t completely die:
So, excluding everything buy Argentum, if our hypothetical FOMO trader had invested $100 in our bottom-five sample near the 2013 peak, it would currently be worth ~$2.96—a ~97% loss. Putting it all together, $300 invested in this sample of 15 coins as close to the peak of the 2013 market as the data will let me get, would be worth $429.95—a disappointing, but not-unexpected ~30.2% increase over five years. That said, I’m honestly somewhat amazed our FOMO trader made anything at all on this basket of coins, considering how many of them failed. In any case, all of his gains came from the top-three coins from 2013: Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ripple.
Conclusions
What’s the lesson here, what’s the takeaway?***** Most importantly, I think the above analysis shows that it can be very dangerous to buy alt-coins when the market is at or near an all-time high—a conclusion that appears to be true regardless of where the alt is positioned in the market. That said, there are a few caveats: (1) this sample was intentionally bad, in order to reflect a worst-case scenario; (2) even buying the top-three coins at the all-time high didn’t net our FOMO trader particularly large gains when compared to someone who bought these same coins after the crash. Therefore, I think that the most important lesson here is not to buy high in the first place. Investing solely because of FOMO will probably cause you to lose money, unless you have invested equally in a broad range of cryptocurrencies, like the trader in our hypothetical. Even then, however, our FOMO trader probably would have done better investing in an S&P Index fund over the same period.
Endnotes
*This is a correction to my earlier piece, in which I stated that the cryptocurrency market peaked on November 30, 2013, at a total market capitalization of ~$15.2 billion. I made this error due to having failed to narrow the date range of the chart so I could properly zoon in. That said, the exact details of the market peak don’t affect the conclusions from my last piece, which considered trades made after the market had bottomed out.
** …you do not talk about trading. Wait, that’s the wrong rulebook.
*** Since I already typed it out, here’s the list of remaining active coins, in descending order: Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Ripple (XRP), Peercoin (PPC), Namecoin (NMC), Megacoin (MEC), Feathercoin (FTC), WorldCoin (WDC), Primecoin (XPM), Freicoin (FRC), Novacoin (NVC), Zetacoin (ZET), Infinitecoin (IFC), Terracoin (TRC), Crypto Bullion (CBX), Anoncoin (ANC), Digitalcoin (DGC), GoldCoin (GLD), Yacoin (YAC), Ixcoin (IXC), Fastcoin (FST), BitBar (BTB), Mincoin (MNC), Tagcoin (TAG), FlorinCoin (FLO), I0Coin (I0C), Phoenixcoin (PXC), Argentum (ARG), Elacoin (ELC)
**** I know that we could have sold them sooner, and probably for more money, but let’s just assume that our hypothetical FOMO trader was a founding member of the #hodlgang. ;-)
***** Don’t mess with Maui when he’s on a breakaway! You’re welcome. ;-)
Disclosures: I have previous held Litecoin, and currently hold approximately $140 of Ripple. I do not believe this influenced my analysis in any way. I have never bought or held any of the other coins discussed in this analysis.
Edits: Formatting, typos, minor clarifications.

Bitcoin Cash green icons, flag and token

I created two green bitcoin cash icons that I'd like to share because a google search doesn't come up with much. One is the square "flag" and the other is a circular token. For the flag, I minimized the "background" brackets on the sides and and made the diameter of the inset circle slightly bigger. This gives the circle a bit of a "pop". I also provided 2 versions, one with a normal size B and the other with a large B. The large B looks nice for small icons.
For the circular token I added "reeding" (the ridges on the coin edge), although the coin is still meant to be pretty abstract.
Since these are in .svg format, the .svg IS the "source format", so you can run a program like inkscape to change the design:

Reason why miners like me won't leave GHASH.IO or won't stop purchasing cloud based mining power through CEX.IO

I've been Bitcoin mining for a little over a year now and I've tried various pools, some popular (BTCGUILD tripplemining) and others not so popular. With BTCGUILD their fees are extremely high and the only other crypto currency your earn is NMC. With Tripplemining they rarely find a block.
With GHASH.IO they have 0% in fees, they of course always find blocks since they are the most powerful pool on the planet (literally), in addtion to BTC mining I also earn NMC, IXC, and DVC. I can also purchase GH/s via CEX.IO which can be added to my existing mining power on GHASH.IO. I can also sell any and all GH/s that I purchase on the CEX.IO exchange and of course if the price of GH/s goes on the CEX.IO exchange I make a profit.
Let's not forget people were saying the same thing about BTCGUILD:

Their solution for commodity investing (mainly in oil) would be to switch to a digital system along the lines of Bitcoin but linked to an asset and this solution is the PERMIAN Token (XPR)

One direct method of owning oil is through the purchase of oil futures or oil futures options. Futures are highly volatile and involve a high degree of risk. Additionally, investing in futures may require the investor to do a lot of homework as well as invest a large amount of capital. Another direct method of owning oil is through the purchase of commodity-based oil exchangetraded funds (ETFs). ETFs trade on a stock exchange and can be purchased and sold in a manner similar to stocks. For example, buying one share of the U.S. Oil Fund (USO) would give you exposure to roughly one barrel of oil. In addition, investors can gain indirect exposure to oil through the purchase of energy-sector ETFs, like the iShares Global Energy Sector Index Fund (IXC), and to energy-sector mutual funds, like the T. Rowe Price New Era Fund (PRNEX). These energy-specific ETFs and mutual funds invest solely in the stocks of oil and oil services companies and come with lower risk. Through the use of smart contracts, we can now replace paper and complex legal agreements that are cumbersome, difficult to transfer and can be hard to track for the average person and even for sophisticated investors. Our solution for commodity investing (mainly in oil) would be to switch to a digital system along the lines of Bitcoin but linked to an asset. This solution is the PERMIAN Token (XPR). Imagine a vault of oil barrels. The oil barrels are owned by "Oil-owner Inc." and the vault is owned by "Vault Inc." Vault Inc. has a spectacular reputation and third-party auditors who verify the amount of oil barrels in its vault. Oil-owner Inc. could offer a digital token to the public that represents ownership of the oil barrels and through a smart contract with Vault Inc. maintain a public off-chain registry that relates fractional interest in the gold with the tokens. For every token sold, Oil-owner Inc. transfers ownership to Vault Inc., who holds it on behalf of the token owner. Vault Inc. guarantees redemption of the value price of oil barrels by anyone who can prove ownership through a digital signature. Oil-owner Inc. can take advantage of the fact that Vault Inc. is trusted (and audited). Owners of the tokens rely on Vault Inc.'s representations and not on Oil-owner Inc. (even though Oil-owner Inc. is the token issuer). One of the main advantages would be that buyers of the tokens could know that they are the only person who has received the token, whereas a buyer of a paper certificate has no way of knowing that the same certificate hasn't been sold to multiple people.

Currently Circulating Cryptocurrencies

Pretty new to the scene. But, as far as I can tell, the list of current digital cryptocurrencies is as follows (Name/Abbreviation/target coin#):
Bitcoin, BTC, 21 million
Litecoin, LTC, 84 million
Feathercoin , FTC,~4xLTC
Terracoin, TRC, 42 million
Peer to Peer Coin, PPC, unlimited/undertermined
Namecoin, NMC,?
Devcoin, DVC, ? IxCoin, IXC, 21 million
Novacoin, NVC, 2 billion, but open
Ven, Ven, ? , http://www.vencurrency.com/
Liquidcoin, LQC, unlimited
I0coin, I0C, ? (maybe dead)
Freicoin, FRC, 100 million
Also: Yacoin and Chinacoin (CNC) are being sold on eBay as new "cryptocurrencies. First time I've seen them.
Missing any? Thoughts on the list? Thoughts on particular currencies? Which are rising, falling, dead, dying? Should we collect them all? A few? Which ones? How would you rank them from best to worst?
Right now, I just have a few BTC, LTC and PPC. Thinking about a couple others.
Note: I didn't rank them in any particular order. Just how they came to mind or as I researched them.

investing in all top altcoins

If you invested 100 USD in all let say top 30 coins on http://coinmarketcap.com/ Do you think you would profit in?
a) 3 months b) 6 months c) 1 year d) 2-5 years e) Never
I'm not planning on doing this, I might just put some money on coins I have faith in, however the idea is funny. And even though the majority of the coins would not increase in value, I think the few (or maybe only 1) that actually succeeds will make up for all the other coins loss.
So you spend 100 USD * 30 coins = 3000 USD. Then you only need that 1 coin increases 3000% to break even (given that all the other coins goes to a value of ~0). This is not impossible given crypto coin history.
Thoughts?
Edit: I made a list of all top 30 coins today 2.december 2013. Lets come back later and check the results of our "imaginary" stack of coins. Format: Coin name: 'Price' gives '100/Price' ABC

What is your crypto-strategy?

I'm a longtime Bitcoin miner (1.5 Ghash/s, nothing huge) and have been looking into what is most likely to make the most sense for making money in the longterm.
Most often I use the Bitparking merged mining pool to mine BTC, NMC, IXC, and DVC. I believe in the future of BTC and like the diversity of some additional cryptocurrencies.
When I see the profitability of another currency higher than 125% of BTC, sometimes I change my miners to join a different pool - usually LTC or PPC. I use http://dustcoin.com/mining to check profitability of different currencies to see what I should be mining. I also double check the profitability numbers against the chart at https://www.coinotron.com/. I keep a small amount of these other currencies, but mainly trade them for BTC.
Now there is also Freicoin which I think is a very interesting alternate crypto currency (see http://freico.in). It's very early in its release so I can mine a high proportion of coins due to the relative low difficulty and relative low total hashrate. I have one GPU mining Freicoin for the potential of it having a reasonable exchange rate once an exchange is available.
What is your strategy for mining various cryptocurrencies?

Why register with the altcoin tipbot? Because you can. Why not Zoidberg? Because he's fictional.

There. I've probably just sold a couple folks on the altcoin tipbot. I've also probably dashed a couple dreams with that Zoidberg statement. An unfortunate truth.
Register for your favourite Canadian alert! currencies.
Here's a quick list of the supported currencies.
BBQCoin (BQC)
Bitcoin (BTC)
Digitalcoin (DGC) heh
Infinitecoin (IFC)
Ixcoin (IXC)
Litecoin (LTC)
Megacoin (MEC)
Mincoin (MNC)
Namecoin (NMC)
Peercoin (PPC)
Quarkcoin (QRK)
Stablecoin (SBC)
Primecoin (XPM)
Zetacoin (ZET)
I'm going to be putting a few DGCs in there, and I'll be trying to pass them around soon through various events. Hope you all can do the same!

Altcoins, Bitcoins and Gox - No competition theory

A lot of people (altcoiners and bitcoiners) usually discuss altcoins as if there was some sort of competition where is Facebook and Bitcoin is myspace or other nonsensical comparisons.
Since Bitcoin has a bit of a Gox induced crisis of faith, I'd like to take this opportunity to settle this matter.
If the theory is correct, that some altcoin is truly a Bitcoin competition, then this altcoin would do well when Bitcoin isn't doing well. So since bitcoin declined sharply in the last 4-5 days on non Gox exchanges from around 800 to lows around 600 (a 25% fall), you'd expect to see this change reflect in some way positively on some truly competing altcoin right?
So why, if some argue altcoins are competition to bitcoin, are they not doing good right now? Because they're not competition. Bitcoin is altcoins reserve currency that provides fungability to all of them. Bitcoin does good, altcoins do good. Bitcoins do bad, altcoins do bad.
I hope this settles the debate once and for all.
